New refrigeration and energy equipment at Aldi, in Dettingen Way, Bury St Edmunds, approved

A town supermarket’s bid to install new refrigeration and energy equipment has been approved.

ALDI Stores Ltd applied to West Suffolk Council for replacement refrigeration plant equipment and four air source heat pumps and associated infrastructure for its Dettingen Way, Bury St Edmunds, outlet.

The replacement fridge equipment would be more energy efficient and the heat pumps would mean some of the store’s energy use would be from a low-carbon source.

Bury Town Council recommended the plans be approved.

Planners said the project was ‘modest in size’ and would not be overdevelopment.

They said the supermarket’s efforts to cut its carbon impacts should be supported.

A noise survey said the new equipment would reduce the level of noise at the site and so would not negatively impact residents.

The application said two trees would need to be removed for the works, but an approval report said no trees would be cut down.

The refrigeration infrastructure includes a gas cooler, refrigeration pack and two different condensing units.

The hardstanding area where the equipment is at the moment will be extended by 10sqm to accommodate the new infrastructure.
